Fiber Manufacturing Engineer

Summary
The ideal candidate for the position will be a highly motivated recent graduate with a desire to learn. Due to the nature of this position, a very high degree of initiative, teamwork, and communication are required. Candidate will support manufacturing through activities such as troubleshooting, training, optimization, and creating documentation.  The engineer will analyze processes, suggest improvement projects, and then take projects from feasibility and concept development through implementation and validation. The engineer will be responsible for optimizing the fiber manufacturing process and equipment, identifying process improvements, validation of process and equipment, and resolving process and equipment problems through lean manufacturing and other problem-solving techniques.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develops or participates in the development of solutions to problems specific to assigned projects
  • Participates in continuous improvement projects
  • Works with manufacturing and quality groups on manufacturing regulatory compliance issues
  • Plan, execute, and document validation activities
  • Performs engineering studies on equipment, process, materials, and methods
  • Designs and performs routine testing, project experiments, data analysis, and reports results
  • Performs work assignments within production department that include training, technical support, and/or process/equipment troubleshooting.
  • Interprets, follows, and recommends modifications to operating procedures  
  • Participates in cross-functional teams
  • Creates or revises validation protocols or operating instructions
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to work in an environment without daylight/windows.
  • Ascends/descends ladders to access machinery.
  • Lifting and/or moves up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move in excess of 50 pounds using lifting aids, techniques, or appropriate assistance.
  • Duties may require overtime work, including nights and weekends as needed.
  • Use of hands and fingers to manipulate equipment is required.
  • Requires standing, walking, bending, pulling, pushing, climbing, and crawling.

Qualifications:
  • Basic knowledge of product design and process development
  • Basic understanding of manufacturing protocols, statistical tools and methodology, and continuous improvement techniques preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
  • Demonstrated initiative and sound judgment
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to prioritize and execute multiple projects
  • Ability to diagnose problems and recommend solutions in assigned area
  • Desire to gain hands-on equipment experience
  • Proficient computer skills including familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations
  • Desire to continually learn to keep up with changing technology
  • Strong accountability and ownership

Education and/or Experience. 
  • Minimum of a 4-year degree in an engineering field is required (preferred: chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, polymer engineering, or material science and engineering).
