Textile Chemist

The Textile Chemist will apply technical knowledge of chemistry to the production and manufacture of textiles. In this role, the job duties may focus on a specific part of the process, such as preparation, finishing, quality assurance, or research and development of new techniques or fibers. The successful candidate will apply the basic principles of chemistry to the understanding of textile materials, for the purpose of functionally and aesthetically modifying them into useful and desirable items, and apply knowledge of surface chemistry to cleaning processes and modifications, such as dyeing and finishing.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Evaluate advances in textile materials, fabrics, and chemicals for business foresight
  • Responsible for all aspects of the Union Rapid Prototype Center (URPC)
  • Working in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Lead advance research project teams as needed
  • Work with Plant Management to resolve technical/chemistry related quality issues
  • Knowledge of fabric testing and standard methods
  • Attend trade shows, conferences, and seminars for continual education on industry insight and direction
  • Assist and track the processing and production of new product developments thru the plant
  • Track and monitor activities to ensure continuous progress towards established goals and timelines
  • Develop initial patent writeups and communicate with patent attorneys for IP
  • Dedicate 5% to 10% of time to Skunkworks projects
  • Write, execute, evaluate, and summarize Design of Experiments
  • Manage URPC technicians
  • Advance research project team member, as SME
  • Trusted textile chemistry subject matter expert
  • Maintain professional relationship with chemical suppliers and vendors
  • Establish, maintain, and train physical property test methods in the test laboratory
  • Establish and maintain member or committee member on critical trade organizations
  • Develop/determine costing of new products and manufacturing times
  • Maintains URPC budget
  • 20% or less travel required

Qualifications Include:

  • B.S. Degree in Chemistry, Textile Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Related Field of Study; advanced degree in Polymer Chemistry or Chemical Engineering preferred
  • 5+ years of applied chemistry within the textile industry
  • Previous textile manufacturing experience preferred
  • Knowledge and experience in textile wet processing (preparation, dye and finishing)
  • Textile manufacturing supply chain experience preferred
