Civil Engineer Intern

In partnership with the Mark Twain National Forest; Supervisor's Office of the USDA Forest Service, Greening Youth Foundation seeks a 26-week, Civil Engineering Resource Assistant (RA) Intern to assist with providing technical engineering work on complete conventional projects of limited scope, or a portion of a larger and more diverse project. This internship will provide exposure to the Forest Service and rural Missouri communities.
The incumbent provides engineering input into the interdisciplinary planning process for natural resource development activities involving engineering projects. Civil Engineer Resource Assistant (RA) Intern to assist with providing technical advice on all aspects of complex/unusual facility maintenance projects which include improvement plans for buildings, barracks, bridges, water and wastewater systems, residences, recreational and other site facilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assists Civil Engineer and other professionals in completing projects, tasks and activities.
  • Coordinate engineering and administrative work between the Forest and Ranger Districts.
  • Interpret engineering project notes, data, and specifications of roads, trails, bridges, drainage structures, and other systems.
  • Help prepare and review drawings and sketches, construction details, installation drawings and other technical products to support civil engineering projects and operations.
  • Provide direction to others in the principles of planning, designing, operation, maintenance, monitoring, and inspection of engineering facilities.
  • Help write reports to inform key staff and partners regarding quality assurance and control issues.
  • Conduct safety inspections and condition surveys of structures and facilities such as buildings, water and wastewater systems, recreation site facilities, and utilities according to requirements.
  • Evaluate and recommend corrective action as needed to ensure the safety of all users.
  • Provide technical support in coordinating detailed site surveys and stake setting.
  • Conduct field surveys to provide data for civil engineering project designs.
  • Help conduct inspections of civil engineering and construction project materials, equipment, construction techniques, processes, and installation to ensure compliance with contract requirements.

Experience and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, engineering technology, or related field.
  • Skilled in use of GIS, AutoCAD, graphic design tools preferred
  • Interest in environment/natural resource management and the US Forest Service.
  • Ability to work both independently and with others collaboratively on projects.
  • Strong writing skills with demonstrated writing ability.

Work Environment:
May be required to travel and work in the backcountry and other remote locations on the forest, independently and in teams.
The Mark Twain National Forest includes about 1.5 million acres of Federal lands in 29 Missouri counties. The Forest has 6 Ranger Districts, 7 Wilderness Areas, a large number of Missouri Natural Areas, 2 National Trails, the Glade Top Trail National Scenic Byway, over 700 caves, and the Eleven Point and Lower Current National Scenic Rivers. It is within driving distance of several recreational lakes in Missouri & Arkansas, as well as to cultural and sports opportunities in St. Louis, Springfield, Columbia, and Kansas City, among others.
We are truly a working Forest as we accomplish a full range of vegetation and recreation management activities on the forest include timber harvest and regeneration activities, TSI, prescribed fire, developed and dispersed recreation, and mining.
Located in the Missouri Ozarks, the oldest mountain range in the country, the Mark Twain is comprised mainly of upland hardwoods and some associated shortleaf pine, with unique natural communities scattered throughout. Prehistoric & historic evidence of people in the Ozarks is common. The Trail of Tears winds its way through parts of the Forest and we host the Remember the Removal riders each year as they pass by.
